There seems to be a lot of negative talk about “selfies” – photographs taken of yourself – especially of yourself in a yoga pose that’s perceived as advanced or unattainable. I say who are we to judge? Have you asked the person why they have posted the photo? Do you know anything about the person except why you don’t them for posting the photo?
For me, I began documenting my practice early on, a way of watching my body transform from sick, weak and in pain. Now, the photos represent something I didn’t expect. They are a celebration of transformation in my mind. No longer am I sick, weak and in pain – in body or mind.
It’s not about the pose. Never was.
It’s about releasing judgement and expectations.
It’s about persistence, discipline, forgiveness, acceptance.
It’s about freedom.
It’s about celebrating what is! Today. Freezing the moment in time. Learning from yourself, your best teacher.
So I say take photos. As many as you want.
And keep practicing.
P.S. There is no “real life” application for this pose. If was about the pose, then I have wasted my time. But I learned a lot about myself along the way and hope to provide a safe place for you to do the same.
